  23. 1.  INTRODUCTION

  25. Hello and welcome to PowWow Version 4.0, the next step in instant 
  26. communications!
  27.  
  28. This version of PowWow installs over your old version.  Your Buddy 
  29. List, Address Book, and other components will automatically upgrade.
  30.  
  31. 1.1.  PASSWORDS
  32. You can still run your old version by clicking on the old PowWow 
  33. icon, however, you will need to re-enter your password since PowWow
  34. Version 4.0 stores passwords in a different fashion than previous
  35. versions.
  36.  
  37. If you are unsure of what your password is, you can retrieve it 
  38. by going to <http://support.tribal.com/powwow/password/>.
  39.  
  40. 1.2.  INTEROPERABILITY
  41. PowWow is now compatible with AOL Instant Messenger and Microsoft
  42. Network Messenger.

  45. 2.  NOTE TO USERS OF PREVIOUS VERSIONS:
  46.  
  47. PowWow Version 4.0 is compatible with and installs over older
  48. versions of PowWow.  Your prior settings are preserved when
  49. you install the new version of PowWow.

  51. 2.1  PASSWORDS
  52. Beginning with PowWow Version 4.0, the length of passwords and the
  53. method used to encrypt passwords has changed to increase security.
  54.   
  55. If you run an older version of PowWow after running PowWow 4.0, the
  56. 'Save Password' option will be disabled, and you will be prompted 
  57. to re-enter your password.

  59. If you are unsure of what your password is, or need to change your
  60. password, visit <http://support.tribal.com/powwow/password/>.

  62. To enable the 'Save Password' option, go to the Preferences menu
  63. in your old version of PowWow
  64.

  66. 3.  NOTES TO WINDOWS 98 SECOND EDITION USERS:
  67.  
  68. PowWow has been tested for compatibility with Windows 98 SE and
  69. it works fine with the following provisions:
  70.  
  71. 3.1  DISABLING INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING
  72. If you are using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), you must first
  73. uninstall it before running PowWow from the Network applet in your
  74. Control Panel.
  75.  
  76. PowWow works by mapping your PowWow (e-mail) address to the unique IP
  77. address of your network interface. With these two pieces of information,
  78. other copies of PowWow can make connections to contact you, transmit
  79. instant messages, and so forth.
  80.  
  81. Technologies such as Windows 98 Second Edition's Internet Connection
  82. Sharing work by allowing several computers to share the same network
  83. connection and IP address by proxy.
  84.  
  85. When you use a proxying service such as ICS, your computers no longer
  86. have an unique IP address assigned to their network connections.  As a
  87. consequence, PowWow will be unable to correctly make connections.

  90. 4.  NOTE TO WINDOWS 95 AND WINDOWS NT 4.0 (PRE-SERVICE PACK 4) USERS:
  91.  
  92. 4.1  BROWSER REQUIREMENTS
  93. Beginning with Version 4.0, PowWow has a built-in mini web browser 
  94. to download configuation data and render HTML elements within the 
  95. program, such as custom icons and the web browser tabs.  The mini 
  96. web browser makes use of core Microsoft Internet Explorer files, 
  97. available with Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 4.0 or later.

  99. If Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 (or later) is not installed, 
  100. PowWow will not work.  This can be fixed by installing the latest 
  101. version of Internet Explorer from 
  102.

  105. on Microsoft's web site.
  106.  
  107. This is required for PowWow to operate.  You can still use 
  108. other web browsers such as Netscape Navigator with PowWow.
  109.  
  110. 4.2  OTHER DLL REQUIREMENTS
  111. PowWow uses the 32-bit Common Controls library to create many of 
  112. the dialog boxes and windows you see. If you have an older version 
  113. of the COMCTL32.DLL file PowWow may not be able to draw these
  114. correctly and will cause a General Protection Fault as a result.
  115.  
  116. In order to use PowWow, you must have Version 4.70 or later of 
  117. the COMCTL32.DLL file. Version 4.70 of the COMCTL32.DLL file is
  118. dated August 8, 1996, 8:30PM with a size of 310,544 bytes.

  120. NOTE: Updating your copy of Internet Explorer (see 4.1 BROWSER
  121.       REQUIREMENTS, above) installs the latest version of the
  122.       COMCTL32.DLL file.
  123.  
  124. For Windows 95 users, if you have an older version, you need to install
  125. the latest version of the COMCTL32.DLL file. It is available for download
  126. from Microsoft's FTP site at:

  130. After you have downloaded the file, run it by double-clicking on the
  131. COMCTL32.EXE file. If you are unsure of where the file is on your
  132. computer, use the Find Files applet from the Start Menu to locate it.

  135. For Windows NT user, you can download the latest Service Pack from
  136. Microsoft's FTP site at:

  138.   ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/

  140. Go to the appropriate subdirectory for your country, for example,
  141. "usa" for the United States, and follow the path to the Service Pack
  142. subdirectory.  You may wish to install any Hot Fixes available, as
  143. well.

  145. Be sure to reboot your computer after installing any fixes for the
  146. changes to take effect.

  151. This is a beta test version of PowWow and is not eligible for technical 
  152. support.  Please use the FEEDBACK tab in your copy of PowWow 4.0 to
